Black Phone 2: The brave choice is to let a story end

Black Phone 2 delivers a few solid thrills, but it’s hard to shake the feeling that this sequel exists more out of obligation than inspiration. I enjoyed watching it for what it was, a tense, atmospheric return to the unsettling world introduced in the first film, but once the credits rolled, I couldn’t help thinking, did we really need this?

One of the biggest disappointments is how little Finn factors into the story. After everything he endured in the first movie, his arc deserved real development, or at least some meaningful resolution. Instead, his presence feels more like a cameo than a continuation. It's as if the narrative set him aside without truly closing the door on his journey.

The movie also teases a promising idea with the whole "it started here" angle, but never commits to exploring it. There was a golden opportunity to dig deeper into Bill/The Grabber, and give us some history, some psychological grounding, something that adds weight to his menace. Instead, the sequel keeps him at arm’s length, leaving his motivations frustratingly vague.

At the end of the day, Black Phone 2 isn't a bad movie; it's just a thin one. It expands the world without enriching it. And honestly, I'm crossing my fingers that the studio resists the urge to keep stretching this story. A Part III would risk diluting what made the original chilling in the first place.

Sometimes, letting a story end is the bravest choice.
