Unhappy middle-aged people searching for connection
Finally watched Splitsville — a movie that follows two couples whose friendship erupts into conflict when the husband of the divorcing couple sleeps with the wife of the open marriage couple. It is directed by Michael Angelo Covino, from a screenplay he co-wrote with Kyle Marvin.
The tagline for Splitsville on Letterboxd says, “AN UNROMANTIC COMEDY.” which is exactly what this is: unromantic and an unromantic comedy. But I believe this is an original script, so there’s that.
What worked for me: The shockingly well-choreographed fight scene, the sight gags (I noticed 2/3), the cast, the subtle absurdity and goofiness, and the direction. The fish scene on the rollercoaster swooped me. I liked the screwball elements of the comedy — it’s rare to see those these days.
What didn’t work for me: The ending felt rushed (but so did the beginning, in a way). What I mean is that rushing back to your exes and leading a normal life felt unsatisfying to me — maybe I wasn’t expecting that, or didn’t see it coming. It also felt a little odd how two man-child inexplicably managed to impress beautiful women.
Anyway, it was definitely a fun, entertaining, and somewhat hilarious movie I’ve seen recently. Since it was “AN UNROMANTIC COMEDY”, let’s not dive too deep here.
cheers,
meew
